Pelindaba’s Organic Lavender Buds are harvested by hand from the flowers we grow in our own certified organic fields on San Juan Island, WA after we complete the culinary harvest.
While they are not suitable for culinary use, they are correspondingly more laden with pure essential oil, leading to a richer fragrance when used in various non-culinary uses.
The lavender flower buds, laden with essential oil, are stripped from their stalks after being harvested, bundled and hung up to dry for several weeks – the exact duration being dependent on the prevailing weather. They are then sifted to remove leaf and stalk fragments in preparation for use to re-fill sachets, crafting, etc.
Lavender essential oil is an aromatic oil. This means that its fragrance is experienced as the essential oil slowly evaporates. Once the essential oil on the outside of the lavender buds has evaporated, squeeze the buds to release more oil. This method of refreshing buds can extend their efficacy greatly. If you have a sachet of lavender buds at home that doesn't have much scent, give if a few good squeezes!
